SOUTH PADRE ISLAND - Grammy Award-winning Houston rapper Chamillionaire might own the most aliases in hip-hop. He's been dubbed "The Texas Titan," "The Mixtape Messiah" and, by himself, "The King of Everything."
The chart-topping MC and singer earned the monikers by releasing a string of buzzed about mixtapes in the 1990s, collaborating with MC Paul Wall on the popular 2002 release "Get Ya Mind Correct" and, finally, scoring a number one hit and a Grammy Award with "Ridin" in 2007.
All through his career, Chamillionaire has stated that his goal is to prove that the southern states, primarily Texas, can produce quality hip-hop lyricists.
"I try to think up creative concepts for songs because there are a lot of rappers that just follow the lead of the last hot rapper. I'm bringing some innovative and lyrically creative music to the world from a Southerners' perspective," Chamillionaire told SixShot.com shortly before the release of his first solo album, 2005's "The Sound of Revenge."
"Revenge," was praised by critics for its soul-driven hooks and the rapper's honest and sometimes humorous wordplay. The album featured collaborations with rappers Lil' Flip and Krayzie Bone among others. It was certified platinum in the U.S., and sold 130,000 units in its first week.
"Ridin'" was the second single from the album. The video for the track won the Best Rap Video Award at the 2006 MTV Music Video Awards.
The rapper won more mainstream recognition in 2006 with guest vocal stints on the song "That Girl" by singer Frankie J and on "Get Up," by popular R&B singer Ciara.
More collaborations with popular MCs marked Chamillionarie's second album, "Ultimate Victory," released in 2007. Influential MC Slick Rick is featured on the album's first single "Hip Hop Police." The video for that track won Best Hip-Hop video of the Year at the 2007 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
"Ultimate Victory" reached the top ten on the "Billboard" Hot 200 chart in 2007 and was well received by critics and fans, garnering a four-star rating by readers of RollingStone.com.
Chamillionaire has used his mainstream success to fund and produced three "Mixtape Messiah" projects, which the rapper makes available for download from his Web site (www.chamillionaire.com). The online albums, or mixtapes, feature guest performances from a slew of Southern rappers. The upcoming "Mixtape Messiah 4" album, due later this year, will reportedly have a conventional retail release.
